He was previously a Departmental Lecturer in English at Balliol College, Oxford, after completing his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Oxford. He specialises in British literature of the nineteenth century and has edited several major essay collections including Dickens's Style (Cambridge UP, 2013), Poetry in the Making: Composition and Revision in Victorian Poetic Drafts (Oxford UP, 2020) and On Style in Victorian Fiction (Cambridge UP, 2020). He is currently working on two books: one on representations of hope and anticipation in nineteenth-century fiction; a second on Dickens's creative practices through a detailed study of his manuscript drafts. All his work considers the way that language and style are integral to literature's most profound and distinctive representations of human experience.
