Ryan Antiel

Biography

Ryan Antiel, MD, MSME is Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine and faculty at the Indiana University Center for Bioethics and the Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics.  Dr. Antiel’s scholarship focuses on improving the lives of children and families confronted with difficult decisions such as surgical decision-making in the face of uncertainty and end-of-life issues. His research combines empirical approaches from the fields of epidemiology, decision-making sciences, and child outcomes with conceptual work grounded in moral philosophy and theology. He applies these approaches to address ethical challenges surrounding the care of seriously ill fetuses and neonates.  Dr. Antiel earned his medical degree from Mayo Medical School and completed general surgery resident at the Mayo Clinic. He completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery from Washington University in St. Louis.  He was previously an Edmund Pellegrino pre-doctoral fellow at Georgetown University’s Center for Clinical Bioethics. He also completed a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He is the author or co-author of over 70 articles and book chapters.
